A Leviathan to Love, in Paris

Anish Kapoors latest sculpture, fashioned from PVC and measuring about 775,000 square feet, is one of his most moving creations to date. Sharing some of Cloud Gates (Chicago, 2004) signature curves, Leviathan takes Paris annual Monumenta exhibition at the Grand Palais literally. Perhaps resembling the Biblical sea-monster for which it is named, Kapoors Leviathan is a monumental sculpture, something dark in a space that is all about light. But Leviathan offers viewers two unique experiences - interior and exterior. No doubt impressive from the outside, Leviathans belly is a surreal, other-worldly space that bathes visitors in blood-red light that changes in hue as daylight floods in through the Grand Palais glass domes. Kapoors interpretation of la vie en rose, perhaps?Leviathan will be on show through June 23 and is dedicated to Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, an outspoken critic of Chinas human rights record, who has not been heard from since he was detained in April by Chinese authorities.Find great luxury hotels in Paris on Perfect Escapes.
